Developed and precisely adjusted by the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop, these pickups deliver all the power, attack and presence that made early-'60s Stratocaster®s famous. - Early-1960s–inspired voicing for an authentic, powerful and dynamic vintage Stratocaster® tone - Alnico 5 magnets - 75 pF micro-capacitor integrated into the bridge pickup to reproduce the natural smoothness of the original pickup’s high end - The first 630 sets receive Custom Shop relic aging, limited-edition collector packaging and a certificate of authenticity signed by Philip Sayce and Seymour W. Duncan. The Philip Sayce "Big Daddy" Stratocaster® pickup set is a sonic tribute to the pickups on one of Philip’s favorite vintage guitars. It captures the power and personality that made '60s Stratocaster®s legendary. The Big Daddy set faithfully represents what an exceptional pickup set sounds like after more than 60 years of natural aging and countless high‑intensity performances. Philip Sayce has established himself as a major figure in modern blues‑rock. Anyone who’s heard his signature lines knows he’s a Stratocaster® master. Sayce is particularly known for playing two iconic 1963 Stratocaster®s: Mother and Big Daddy. Although both are 1963 models, they have radically different characters. Mother is fitted with a slightly underwound 1958 pickup set, offering a precise, airy and highly expressive sound typical of '50s Stratocaster®s. Big Daddy, by contrast, has a bigger, meatier personality, embodying everything that makes '60s Stratocaster®s so great. After the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop recreated the Mother Stratocaster® pickups with remarkable detail in 2025, Philip felt Big Daddy deserved the same exceptional treatment. In the early 1960s, Stratocaster® pickups evolved to a higher output and a more pronounced attack. That sonic signature is what led Philip to seek out 1963 Stratocaster®s throughout his career, whether alongside Jeff Healey, Melissa Etheridge or in his solo work. After long years of searching, he finally found Big Daddy, a 1963 Sunburst Stratocaster® that quickly became one of his go‑to guitars on stage and in the studio. Today the neck and bridge pickups are still original, while the middle pickup was replaced with a rare "gray bottom" early‑1965 model, carefully selected. According to Philip, this combination turns Big Daddy into a true sonic "steamroller": the guitar he reaches for when he wants the most massive, powerful Stratocaster® sound. To recreate these unique pickups, the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop and its engineering team meticulously developed a recipe to accurately reproduce the tone, feel and output level of the originals: - a neck pickup that is broad and rich in harmonics; - an expressive, warm and slightly "thick" middle pickup; - a bridge pickup that strikes the perfect balance between power and sparkle, with present but never harsh highs. Through extensive measurements and countless listening tests, the Custom Shop team succeeded in faithfully reproducing the character and sonic attitude of Philip’s guitar. Over time, the original bridge pickup developed a particular evolution: the copper wire of its winding gradually made direct contact with the Alnico 5 magnets, subtly softening the high frequencies. To reproduce this unique sonic fingerprint, Seymour Duncan’s engineers integrated a capacitor soldered to the rear of the pickup. This solution slightly shifts the resonance peak and adds the high‑end smoothness necessary for the overall balance of the set. To celebrate Big Daddy’s year of birth, the first 630 Philip Sayce "Big Daddy" Stratocaster® pickup sets receive hand‑applied cosmetic aging by the Custom Shop to emulate the look of the original pickups. Each example ships in limited‑edition collector packaging and includes a certificate of authenticity signed by Philip Sayce and Seymour W. Duncan. All sets also feature Philip’s signature printed directly on the pickups’ flatwork. Looking for the uncompromising authentic sound of a '60s Stratocaster®? The Philip Sayce "Big Daddy" Stratocaster® set delivers the breadth, dynamics and power that fuel Philip Sayce’s most intense performances. - Magnet: Alnico V - Applications: rock, blues - Winding: single coil - Category: electric pickup - Color: White - Electronics: Passive - Instrument: guitar - Number of conductors: 1 - Position: set
