Description

The 4K-B-DYN-500 lets you add strikingly colorful compression to your production toolbox, from one of the most famous and rare studio consoles ever made.


The famous Compressor/Limiter mode.
The B-DYN 611B format 500 features a compressor design based on the famous SSL Bus Compressor, faithfully recreating the dynamics processing circuitry of an SL 4000 B console.

The RATIO parameter lets you set the compression ratio to fixed values of 2:1, 4:1, 10:1, and 10:1 with an additional sidechain filter for DS mode. The THRESH (Threshold) parameter sets the threshold at which the compressor is triggered. When the signal exceeds the level defined by this setting, the compressor kicks in according to the ratio defined by the Ratio control. The Threshold and Ratio controls also feature automatic gain compensation.
The HPF parameter inserts a 6 dB / octave high-pass filter at 185 Hz into the compressor sidechain to reduce bass pumping, while the Release parameter features a fixed release range from 0.2 to 1.6 ms, with additional DS and Auto options. DS mode (for De-Ess) changes the attack time from around 30 ms to 2 ms.

An integrated De-Essing mode!
By setting the Compressor Ratio and Release controls to "DS", the B-DYN module is optimized to reduce sibilance (De-Essing). De-Ess is a sidechain-filtered input signal with a ratio of 10:1, delivering broad-spectrum compression triggered by sibilance.
The DS release rate varies automatically in response to the processed signal, between 30 and 50 ms, representing a much faster minimum release rate than can usually be expected from an SSL dynamics section. The attack time is also lowered to 2 ms, slightly faster than the E-Series Dynamics module on its Fast setting.

A Gate/Expander mode.
The Gate / Expander section of the B-DYN can act as a Gate with a 20:1 ratio, or as a 2:1 Expander when the EXP button is pressed, with an attack time fixed at 0.2 ms.
The Range parameter controls the maximum gain reduction applied by the Gate/Expander. When set to Out, the Gate/Expander is bypassed. The Thresh parameter sets the threshold above which the gate/expander opens, while the Release parameter adjusts how long the signal remains audible after the gate/expander closes.

Exp mode, activatable via a front-panel knob, switches the gate into expander mode with a smooth curve, for more subtle control of the level below the threshold.
