Mariano began building instruments in a simple garage owned by his father in a neighborhood near downtown Los Angeles. He later chose the name Gon Bops for the simple reason that Gon was one of the colloquialisms of the time, "everything is gone, man! "and Bops because everyone around him called him Bob, which was close to Bop. The name Gon Bops was born!

The founder of the brand, was not just a simple instrument designer, he was also known for developing several improvements that revolutionized traditional Latin instruments. These advances, in addition to sound and manufacturing quality made Gon Bops percussion more comfortable to play than competing products; especially with the rounded rim, which was not the case on other instruments at the time.
