Ramon Mongo Santamaria is undoubtedly one of the most respected percussionists and a pioneer of modern Latin Jazz. His career began in the 1950s with his group, the Blacks Cuban Diamonds. He has recorded dozens of legendary percussion albums. World hits such as "Watermelon Man" in 1963 and the album "Summertime" in 1980 are just two of the many successes of this percussion master. Mongo has inspired more percussionists than any conguero in the world. He sadly passed away in February 2003 at the age of 85.
