SEYMOUR DUNCAN APH-2B-Z Slash, bridge, zebra
Slash played for decades with Alnico II Pro humbuckers, as heard on the album Appetite for Destruction. While developing his Les Paul Signature model, he noticed a tonal difference between his old pickups and the new ones. So Seymour rose to the challenge of developing pickups with identical tone.
So, why would we want a weaker magnet?
Stronger magnets mean a stronger signal, yes, but they tend to add mids and tighten
the lows (which suits heavier music). For
more traditional music (rock ’n’ roll, blues, jazz, classic rock,
etc.) the APHs are perfect because the weaker magnet doesn’t affect
string vibration and lets them ring as they should. It captures
your every nuance, those little slides or changes in
dynamics you make with your fingers. Instead of compressing the
signal like higher-output pickups would, the APHs
let those things through exactly as you played them! In
the neck position, it can also produce a superb clean tone, a touch
darker, and with gain it will sound fat and distorted. It’s a
pickup that adapts incredibly well to your amp’s tone, as well as to the
amount of gain you want to use. That’s certainly why Slash used it as his main pickup for so many years!
