Description
Known for his tenure with Deep Purple and a meteoric solo career, Tommy Bolin had already cemented a reputation as a visionary musician by the age of 25, before his untimely passing in 1976. This legendary Les Paul took Joe Bonamassa a full decade of searching to find and is arguably the greatest discovery of his career. The instrument resurfaced in Moab, Utah. After Tommy’s death, its original owner, David Brown, retrieved it. The guitar had never actually belonged to Tommy Bolin: Brown had lent it to him after his Gold Top was stolen in the early 1970s. Brown, who bought the Les Paul in 1966 (a receipt that Joe Bonamassa still carefully keeps), had entrusted it to Tommy at that time. Because Tommy was primarily associated with the Stratocaster, a unique modification was made. A Bigsby vibrato, originally designed for a Fender Telecaster, was forcibly mounted on the instrument. The ground wire running from the Bigsby to the potentiometer is still visible today, a testament to this improvised adaptation. The guitar also retains its original pickguard, hand-painted and signed by David Brown. On the back, a small, barely perceptible area shows traces of a scratched-off inscription. During a performance on American Bandstand, one of the producers reportedly told Dick Clark that “the long-haired hippie guitarist” had an inappropriate word on his instrument. He was then forced to partially remove it. Today, when Joe Bonamassa plays this guitar on stage, he uses a reproduction pickguard made by his friend Tony at Pick Guardian, in order to preserve the original patina, marked by the history and legacy of Tommy Bolin. This 1960 Les Paul, nicknamed "Tomato Soup," stands out for its spectacular flamed maple and slim-profile neck. It remains one of a kind: the ultimate treasure and the most precious find of Joe Bonamassa’s life. Joe Bonamassa notably used this iconic guitar on Black Country Communion’s fifth studio album, released on June 14, 2024. For Glenn Hughes, the band’s singer, who was close to Tommy and had not seen this guitar in over forty-five years, it was a deeply emotional moment. - Applications: rock, blues - Category: kit - Instrument: guitar
