Description
Imperfect just like back in the day, with their pros and cons, they deliver that ultra lively, breathing, organic tone unique to vintage pickups.
Shipped in their original “retro” box, these 50th Anniversary JB/Jazz are true pieces of electric guitar tone history.
In the 60s–70s, Alnico magnets were often cast in a mold and then little or not polished. Their surface was therefore irregular and slightly rough, unlike modern magnets, which are ground, polished, and perfectly smooth. Their magnetic field was slightly less uniform and had imperfections unique to each pickup. Sonically, compared to modern versions, they offered:
- a softer attack
- more organic mids
- more natural compression
- and a slightly less tight grain
Another difference: period JB/Jazz also used cellulose butyrate bobbins, an early plastic notably used by Gibson for its original PAFs. The butyrate bobbin is more sensitive to microphonics and heat, and can deform slightly over time. Dimensional tolerances were also far less strict than today and could require hand fitting, meaning the appearance of a unit could vary slightly from one pickup to another.
In terms of sound, compared with current models:
The JB had an aggressive upper midrange but was less cutting—perhaps more singing.
- The Jazz was very clear, with extra sweetness in the highs.
- Both offer a more organic playing feel.
Finally, vintage Seymour Duncan pickups were hand-wound, and variations from one pickup to another were accepted as long as the final result met the quality standard.
