He then replaced the original single-coil bridge pickup with a Seymour Duncan Hot Stack Jazz Bass®, eliminating hum and adding more power.
A few years later, Duff was gifted a bass equipped with a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound P-Bass® in the neck position. The large-diameter Alnico 5 magnets and the pickup’s high output brought a new dimension to his tone. He began pairing this pickup with the Hot Stack Jazz Bass in the bridge position, yielding a powerful combination, rich in grit, low end, and attack.
This duo quickly became Duff’s sonic signature, used ever since on numerous recordings and world tours.
Seymour Duncan teamed up with Duff to offer these two pickups together in the Duff McKagan PJ signature set, adorned with his iconic skull-and-crossbones logo.
