The J48 has a switch mode power supply that allows you to power the circuits with 9 volts! Most active guitars and basses will deliver 7 volts of amplitude at maximum volume. Since most DI's are capable of handling about 3 volts, they saturate. Since the J48 has more headroom, it doesn't have this saturation problem. The extra headroom also reduces harmonic, phase and intermodulation distortion.
