Description
It delivers the legendary DR-series headroom, clarity, and punch at lower volumes—perfect on stage and in the studio. To enjoy that sound in any situation, it features attenuation from 20 down to 0.5 watts.
The DR20/0.5 is probably the best distillation of the DR series’ history. Just like the larger DR103 and DR504 models, it uses David Reeve’s original preamp circuit along with Harry Joice’s mil-spec wiring method.
Different in its power stage, which switches from EL34 tubes to EL84 tubes—common in lower-powered amps like this—the brilliance of its development shows in a tone absolutely faithful to its elders. An exceptionally pure, wide, and dynamic clean sound makes it a first-rate pedal platform. If you’re looking for the mythical DR tone in a compact, portable format, this DR20/0.5 is made for you.
But it doesn’t stop there. To let guitarists—and especially Pink Floyd fans—easily enjoy the Hiwatt overdrive sound, its design incorporates Pete Cornish’s historic modification for David Gilmour: a dedicated “Linked” input that bridges the Normal and Bright channels. It removes the need for a patch cable and lets you use the DR20/0.5 like a modern amp. This modification unlocks the tonal range offered by mixing the channels and simultaneously increases the signal hitting the first preamp tube. The result is a richer, more present, more in-your-face sound.
Among the options that make this amp the best compromise in the entire DR range, you’ll find a front-panel switch that boosts the lows and overall volume for an even bigger sound. For home use, backstage, and other volume-sensitive environments, the power can be reduced to 0.5 watts.
This version of the DR20/0.5 is equipped with the Pupleblack 12" 150W speaker.
This custom Fane Acoustics™ speaker developed for Hiwatt is essential to recapturing the brand’s sound across eras. With 150W power handling, it offers immense headroom before breakup, making it ideal for keeping immaculate cleans at high volumes. This characteristic, perfectly aligned with the DR series design, is also important for projecting the ultra-powerful overdrive these amps can deliver.
Originally designed at the request of David Reeve to a precise spec—including a cast frame and maximum headroom—the Fane speaker is integral to the Hiwatt sound. This Purpleback 12" 150W is still made in England by Fane Acoustics™, adheres to the same specifications, and likewise features a cast frame and the headroom needed to reveal the best of the DR20/0.5.
