HIWATT DR504-C112-FPB DR Custom - All-tube combo amp, DR504, 50W, 1x12 Fane Purpleblack 150
Like the DR103, the DR504 is characterized by an elegant clean tone that enhances effects pedals, and it can keep it intact even at volume levels that defy reason.
Its wider frequency response than other amps of this kind allows it to work with all types of instruments, including basses, keyboards, and even acoustic instruments.
It owes this sound quality to David Reeve’s original and unique, near hi-fi design, to the military-grade point-to-point wiring modeled on the work of Harry Joice, and to a rigorous selection of the best components. Notably present are the famed Partridge™ transformer, specifically designed for vintage Hiwatt amplifiers and reissued for new models, and the 12-inch Fane Pupleback speaker, also specially developed for this purpose and reissued by Fane Acoustic™.
Bridging the two inputs and the DR504’s reduced 50W output lets you achieve the DR103’s wide tonal palette by blending the two channels to taste, while also reaching the brand’s signature crunch tone at “recording” volume. This natural, punchy drive carries a very personal British flavor thanks to its characteristic midrange boost, yet in a way that’s quite different from other major English brands.
This version of the DR504 is equipped with the 12" 150W Pupleblack speaker.
This Fane Acoustics™ speaker, custom-developed for Hiwatt, is crucial to recapturing the brand’s timeless sound. With a 150W power rating, it offers huge volume headroom before breaking up, making it ideal for maintaining a pristine clean tone at high volumes. This trait, perfectly matched to the DR103 and 504 designs, is also key to projecting the ultra-powerful overdrive these amps can deliver.
Originally designed at David Reeve’s request to a precise brief—including a cast frame and maximum headroom—the Fane speaker is an integral part of the Hiwatt sound. This Purpleback 12" 150W is still made in England by Fane Acoustics™, adheres to those same specifications, and likewise receives a cast frame and the headroom needed to make a DR504 sound exactly as it did back in the day.
- Faithful recreation of Dave Reeve’s original late-1960s circuit.
- Meticulously hand-wired in England, in the style of Harry Joyce and his military-grade rigor.
- A first-rate pedal platform, prized for the definition of its clean tone and the headroom to keep effects uncolored. Pedals remain true to themselves without needing an effects loop.
- Versatile and intuitive, it’s perfect for bringing out pickups that lack sparkle or for taming the highs of overly bright pickups.
- Bridge the channels for more gain and punch, and experience the sound that made Hiwatt famous.
- An ultra-versatile amp that accepts many different instruments: basses, keyboards, synths, and other instruments, even acoustics.
